crown_of_antlers: (Sim Aeronwen)
This entry contains some completely unrelated subjects in my Elder Scrolls themed Sims game. LOL First I made some more changes to the Rose Garden Bakery. Since none of the townies were using the outdoor tables I decided to get ride of them and replaced them with the Old Miller Tea Time Set which is a beautiful round table set up with a gorgeous tea set. Sims can interact with it by sitting together and of course drinking tea.

Some large umbrella's decorated with rose themed patterns were placed next to each table. I also added an elegant fence and a gate around the tables because Merriweather Golden's horrible white toy poodle came by and tried to chew up the furniture. So now the gate is locked to pets.

Unexpectedly, the first person who came by and sat down for tea was none other than Vemyn.

Shortly after Vemyn showed up he was joined by Tanor the Sleaze (this is not the demographic I was going for). Eventually they left and more genteel townies showed up, such a Vallisara, Anaril, Aryc and Amaryllis. Eldafire's daughter Vildafire also came to the bakery and sat down at one of the tea tables like a perfect little lady.

Now to an entirely different subject. I ended up having to deal with one of those unfortunate "Character Personalities vs Game Mechanics" issues that always comes up sooner or later in every game. When Aeronwen and Neldor are tending their large garden I usually use that time to go into map view and see what the other townies are doing (I learned the hard way not to make another household active while they are harvesting. When I went back to Rosewood their produce was not in their inventories and had apparently disappeared into the void).

I had noticed during the past few game days that kitten Maggie of the Jackle-Thorn household had been out in the barn all by herself. She never moved from there. Using Sim Control to check her I saw that she was very hungry and very lonely. It was easy to see what happened. The house I gave to Sarasvati and Thorinor, an elegant country-style Victorian, has a small deck and stairs that lead to the front and back doors. Sims 3 puppies and kittens can't go up and down stairs. Maggie was fine as long as she was in the house but at some point she was carried outside. Sarasvati and Thorinor the characters never would have forgotten about her, but their Sim-selves did, so the kitten has been out in the barn and not getting any interaction or care from the rest of the household.

Inactive households seem to do great with caring for their adult pets, but the big reason for that is adult pets are able to look after themselves. They can go up and down stairs, can freely go in and out of the house, and even leave the lot if they need to look elsewhere for food and water. The puppies and kittens on the other hand can easily get stuck in the same situation as Maggie.

I spent a ridiculous amount of time mulling this over. I say ridiculous because everyone is made of pixels and this is just a game. That doesn't change the fact that I love the characters who have developed from the roleplay. Basically I felt bad for even considering taking Maggie away because the characters of Thorinor and Sarasvati would never neglect her. This unfortunately didn't change the fact that Maggie was sitting alone in the barn feeling lonely and going hungry due to inactive-sim neglect. In fact, not even the other household pets were interacting with her. It's nearly three game-weeks into the game and Maggie has no relationship with the other pets at all.

The decision was made when an NPC suddenly spawned outside the Jackle-Thorn home. He was a Pet Adoption Agent and his motivation for being there was "pick up". Yikes. At that moment I reloaded the game even though it would set Aeronwen and Neldor back with the day's harvest by a few game hours.

And so...I went into the active household's story progression settings and found the place that allowed me to add some additional slots to the household. This was when I saw their "try for baby" options were grayed out and I needed to turn on Woohooer's Debugger to see what settings I missed. More on that later in the entry. So, after a few more slots were added Maggie was added to the active household and Aeronwen went over to the Jackle-Thorn home to pick her up.

No one was home, not even any of the other pets and Maggie was still just sitting in the barn. Now having control over her I had her run out to where Aeronwen was waiting. You can see the Jackle-Thorn house in the background. It's a lovely home, but those stairs aren't good when a kitten or puppy is in the household and the inactives don't remember to carry the baby animal back into the house. I considered giving them a different house but I've already put a lot of time into this one, giving it a Telvanni themed nursery and setting up bedrooms for Thorinor and Sarasvati's daughter and son.

Maggie was taken to Rosewood and was immediately the center of attention. She devoured the bowl of gourmet chicken pet food she was given and was then tended to by her new kitty aunties. Ivy was the first to come over and start grooming the kitten. After grooming they ran around the house playing.

Since the Rose Cottage doesn't have steps, Maggie is able to freely go in and out, so after playing with Auntie Ivy she met and played with Auntie Holly (who has been "youthened" from an elder cat to an adult).

Both dogs and both horses curiously stiffed and nuzzled her. Plus she got a lot of attention from her new people parents. Before long the now tired little kitten, whose needs gauges were now filled up and her mood now up to Elated, went inside, used the litter box, then curled up in a cat bed to take a nap.

I can't really think of an in-character reason that the Jackle-Thorns would have asked those at Rosewood to take the kitten but since I'm not writing this in story-form I suppose I don't have to. It was just one of those unfortunate game mechanics things.

Now the Woohooer Debug thingie. As I said, I needed to use that because even after adding more household slots the "Try for Baby" and "Risky Woohoo" was grayed out. It turned out that their "Pregnancy: Allow Participation" was still set to False and it needs to be set to True in order for them to have their twins. After fixing the issue I left the debugger on for a while and was amused to see what all the game tried to do with the townies but was prevented because of the caches I have in place.

Every few minutes a message would pop up about pairings the game tried to create. First it tried to have Anaril and Aryc have an affair. Then it tried to put Acacia and RiData together. Then it tried to have Amaryllis commit adultery with Vemyn (ewwwwww). Then it tried to have Fargoth and Arrille get together. This game really seems to want to turn the place into a town of swingers but thanks to the NRaas mods that isn't happening.

Although this entry has been lengthy, I can't end it without Nerst's latest reports:

Local lover Tureynul Dagoth was recently seen catering to his gaggle of swooners. "One needs to whet their appetites you see," he was heard remarking. "Makes them crave it all the more."

(Cue the sound of Gilvoth gagging.)

"Looks like the crooks in this town can get away with just about anything," lamented Merriweather Golden after finding that her house had been vandalized by one of the local hoods. "That Godonir Black Claw completely destroyed my Final Contribution Dining Chair!"

(Yeah, well Neldor and Aeronwen had to replace some outdoor chairs because your precious little Prince Golden chewed on them. Keep that horrible poodle of yours on a leash!)

Parents of Vildafire Stormwatch decided that she needed a bit of exercise, so they sent her out with step-brother Indafly into the town to play. "My parents say all this outdoorsy stuff is supposed to be good for me," commented Vildafire. "What do they know?"

(Awww cheer up, Vildafire. Going outside and getting fresh air is good for you. You don't want to be one of those people who stays inside playing video games, do you?)

Due to his unpopular nature, Master Neloth and Saje Eldros have been drifting apart lately.

(Nerst, this is old news.)

Apparently stuffing a living room chair full of garlic is a bad idea, as Eldafire found out recently when she broke one at Elegan's house. "Well at least the room smells nicer now."

(Why would you even think of doing that, Eldafire?)

"Is that the best he could do to stand up against me? Hlaalu Helseth was a helpless little mouse compared to my strength!" grinned Verandis Ravenwatch having recently sent Helseth packing with a number of new bruises and scrapes. "How sad. Where is the adversary who is worthy of my attention?"

(At the time of this entry Hlaalu Helseth is in the Dragon Valley hospital. Perhaps his daughters will want to swing by and visit him. *crickets*.....No? All right then.)

Edited to add: After the Maggie situation was dealt with I checked on Rabinna and RiData's puppy. He was doing fine, but their house isn't built on a deck. He's able to freely run outside, make his little puppy puddles, then run back inside where his food and toys are. I'll need to also double-check the other households whom I've permitted to adopt pets and make sure their homes don't end up with a similar situation with a puppy or kitten being left outside and forgotten.

I wonder if there is a mod that stops sims from taking animals from one place to another. Or the dragons.

I always have to check my sims' inventory to make sure there are no minor pets or dragons in their inventory before they to to another land or into the future land.

That picture of Vemyn sipping tea with his pinkie out is killing me! The bakery is looking really cute with the new setup. :D

I'm glad you managed to rescue the kitten. The Sims has always had some problems with the AI of inactive characters being wonky - it reminds me of how the sims 2 needed a mod to stop your dorm-mates in university from starving themselves to death by accident!
